zdev.conf broken, or am I doing it wrong?

try this:
- ls -la /dev/disk/by-path
- /lib/udev/path_id /block/sdb (or whatever your disk device name is)
- zpool_id -d /block/sdb
- partprobe

Then finally ls -la /dev/disk/zpool
