Good Afternoon,

I'm presently in the planning phase of a new high IOPS zfs file system, and I'm planning on using SSDs for the ZIL and the L2ARC. It was brought to my attention that a possible trick to improve the lifespan of these devices would be to create a small partition (say 10GB) on the ZIL and then write into that... so that as the disk aged the partition would move across the disks used for the ZIL.

Does anyone have experience with this? Will it really serve to extend the life of the disks in the ZIL?

w/r,
Kurt J. Strosahl
